RSVP utilizes volunteers to assist local residents

Greene County RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program gives community members a volunteer opportunity while allowing elderly and disabled adults extra support.

RSVP Respite provides time, rest and relief to a full time caregiver of an adult family member or friend who can’t be left alone. Volunteers offer quality companionship to care for recipients.

Program coordinators have noticed caregivers tend to be hesitant to call, encouraging anyone who the services may benefit to reach out, or share the information.

The in-home visitation and phone-a-friend services aim to provide friendship and companionship for older adults who are socially isolated, lonely, or just want good conversation.

The Grocery Assistance-shopping Program (GAP) is a service that helps disabled adults of any age and individuals 60 and older who may have difficulty getting groceries from the store to the kitchen. Participants can take part short term or long term. The goal of the service is to help individuals eat healthy, maintain their independence, and remain in their home. The volunteers bring groceries in when they get home from shopping, leaving them on the counter, or even help put the groceries away if needed.

The Greene County program also holds an annual Lots of Socks and More drive later in the year. Donation baskets are placed in the county, aiming to collect socks and underwear for elementary and middle school children in the county. Families who participate in the winter outwear distribution and/or the Christmas food basket distribution receive items from the drive.

Volunteering is geared towards those 55 years and older, but younger volunteers are welcome. Those volunteering for RSVP 55+ services (respite, visitation, phone friend or grocery shopping) are background checked to ensure the safety of those benefiting from the programs.

If you would like to volunteer, or if these services may benefit you, contact Sheilah Pound at 515-370-1099 or rsvpgreeneco@gmail.com.
